Telephone

Public telephones use prepaid cards which are sold by street vendors or at kiosks.
In order to call to another area, you have to dial the number of the carrier, the number of the region and finally the local phone number. The carriers Embratel (carrier-code 21) and Intelig (carrier-code 23) are active all over Brazil.
These are the Brazilian phone numbers formats:

(phone number) - call to another area:
0-(carrier-code)-(area code)-(phone number) - call to another country:
00-(carrier-code)-(country code)-(area code)-(phone number) - collect call within an area:
90-90-(phone number) - collect call to another area:
90-(carrier-code)-(area code)-(phone number) - collect call to another country:
000111 and wait for instructions - call from another country to Brazil:
++ 55-(area code)-(phone number)
Brazilian emergency numbers are:
- 190 - Police
- 192 - Ambulance
- 193 - Fire-fighters
If you need to call an emergency number, ask a person who speaks Portuguese to call when this is possible.
