Street Names

Brazilian street names often start with one of the following words:
- avenida (abbreviated as Avda. ) – avenue
- estrada – road or motorway
- parque - park
- praça - square
- praia - beach
- rua - street
- travessa – alley
These words are mostly followed by names of important persons in Brazilian history, vain politicians or powerful bureaucrats.
Names that are immortalised in the street names of almost every Brazilian town are:
- Tiradentes – Freedom fighter from the state of Minas Gerais who was executed in 1792.
- Getúlio Vargas – Dictator between 1930 and 1945 and democratically elected president between 1950-1954.
- Juscelino Kubitschek – President between 1956 and 1961. Under his reign the capital Brasília was constructed. He is often referred to as “JK”
- Tancredo Neves – First democratically elected president after the second Brazilian period of dictatorship. He died on April 21, 1985 just one day before he was scheduled to take the oath of office.
