Traveling through the North of Brazil

The North of Brazil consists of the states of Acre, Amapá, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins. Tocantins is the youngest Brazilian state. It was founded in 1989, before this year it was part of the state of Goías. The North occupies nearly half the surface of this country, but it is scarcely populated and only a small fraction of the Brazilian population lives in this region. This region is dominated by the Amazon rainforest and the Amazon river. The vast Amazon rainforest is larger than the North of Brazil and covers parts of Peru, Colombia and several other countries. Cerrado is another biome that is present in this region. Even though Amazon rainforest is not the only biome in the North, the entire region belongs to the Amazônia Legal or "Legal Amazon", a legal and geographic division of this country.
Ecotourism and river trips are the most important things to do for tourists in the Amazon region. The two major cities are the jungle metropolis Manaus and the colonial city of Belém.Time Zones
When you are traveling through this region, bear in mind that there are three time zones. The eastern part of the state of Pará, including the state capital Belém, has the same time zone as the rest of the Brazilian coast except from October to February when the states of the Southeast switch to summer time. When the southern states switch to summer time, the time in eastern Pará is one hour behind. Western Pará, starting on the west bank of the Rio Xingu, and Manaus are one hour behind Belém time. The extreme west of the Amazon, including the cities of Tabatinga and Rio Branco, is two hours behind Belém time and one hour behind Manaus time.Destinations
