Attractions
Mina da Passagem
Between 1719 and 1985, large quantities of gold were dug up in this mine. The first gold was mined with slaves. Later, more and more technology was needed to mine the gold as the gold became more and more depleted. In the 1980-ties, the amount of gold was that low that mining was no longer profitable. Since then, the mine can be visited by tourists.
The mine can be entered by descending with an open car on a railway. Down the mine, a guide presents an interesting tour through the mine. Back in the open air, the guide gives a demonstration in using a pan to separate the gold from sand.
The Mina da Passagem is located at a distance of 4 km from the centre of Mariana. The bus between Ouro Preto and Mariana stops here.
