Eliane Elias – Around the City
Around The City is a sparkling album by Eliane Elias that was released last August. Eliane Elias is a Brazilian born pianist, singer and song writer who lives in New York since 1981. She started playing the piano at the age of 7 and she has a long career as a musician: Around the City is her 18th album already.
When you hear her beautiful, sensuous voice, you wonder why her first 15 albums were mostly instrumental. Songs like Chiclete com Banana are highly demanding to sing but Eliane Elian meets the vocal challenge in an exciting way without neglecting the piano.
Other gems on this album are Elias’ jazzy interpretation of Tito Puente’s Oye Como Va and the songs Slide Show, Segredos, A Vizinha do Lado, and Tropicalia. We play most of the songs on this record over and over again.
Eliane Elias is a brilliant songwriter, in Portuguese as well as in English. It is not necessary to understand the lyrics in order to appreciate her music. Nevertheless, we think she is at her best when she sings in Portuguese. We hope that her future releases contain more songs in this language.
