Rios Christ Redeemer among the New Seven Wonders of the World

Internetters from all over the world selected 7 New Wonders of the World: Chichén Itzá in Mexico, Christ Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, the Great Wall of China, Machu Picchu in Peru, Petra in Jordan, the Colosseum in Roma and the Taj Mahal in India.

The statue Christ the Redeemer or Cristo Redentor on top of the Corcovado mountain in Rio de Janeiro has an altitude of 38 meters. It was designed by Brazilian Heitor da Silva Costa and the French sculptor Paul Landowski took five years for its construction before it was inaugurated on October 12, 1931. Christ the Redeemer has become a symbol of Brazil, of Rio de Janeiro and of the warmth of the Brazilian people, who receive visitors with open arms.

Something completely else. We are learning a lot while making a website on Brazil and we where looking for a way to archive howto's. A howto is an informal and short description of how to accomplish something. We wanted to archive these howto’s online so that these could be accessed from various locations. There was no good alternative so we made one....

Bird watching and digital photography in Brazil

I like nature a lot but and I love to know what species I see. However, I did not get much pleasure from bird watching until recently. I mainly knew two kinds of birds: birds that went away before I discovered which species it is and birds that were to far away to see what species it is. In addition, Brazil counts about 1800 species of birds and I thought that it was simply impossible to find a complete guide to Brazilian birds.

But during my last holiday in Brazil, watching birds was great fun! This was because of two new developments. First of all, a nearly complete guide to Brazilian birds was published. And second, the technological developments in digital photography made it possible to create clear, easily enlargeable pictures of birds that can be viewed the same day.

Around The City is a sparkling album by Eliane Elias that was released last August. Eliane Elias is a Brazilian born pianist, singer and song writer who lives in New York since 1981. She started playing the piano at the age of 7 and she has a long career as a musician: Around the City is her 18th album already.

When you hear her beautiful, sensuous voice, you wonder why her first 15 albums were mostly instrumental. Songs like Chiclete com Banana are highly demanding to sing but Eliane Elian meets the vocal challenge in an exciting way without neglecting the piano.

As Europe is to cold for Latin Carnival, Latins living in the Dutch city of Rotterdam celebrate their style of Carnival during the summer. This great party is called Zomercarnaval which is Dutch for Summer Carnival.

Yesterday, the Summer Carnival 2006 ended in a fantastic parade.

New species of monkey discovered

Scientists discovered a new, blond species of Capuchin monkeys. The group Cebus queirozi consists of 18 individuals living in a piece of Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica).

This discovery is very special as it is a relatively large species of mamal living in a densely populated area. The Atlantic forest once covered the wet hills along the Atlantic coast of Brazil but only small pieces remain as the Brazilian coast was the area were the colonisation of Brazil was concentrated. This group of 18 animals has survived by hiding in some small patches of forest surounded by a swamp.
