The vegetation of Brazil: 6 different biomes
The different climate zones of Brazil are covered by different types of vegetation. Six types of vegetation or biomes can be distinguished in Brazil: the Amazon rainforest, the Cerrado, the Caatinga, the Pantanal, the Mata Atlãntica and the Pampas. Such a biome does not only have its own plant species, but it also has its own community of animals that are well-adapted to these environments: | The Amazon rainforest is the largest rainforest on earth and stretches over 9 countries: Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Surinam and French Guyana. This rainforest is situated in the Amazon Basin that is drained by the Amazon River and its tributaries. | | The Caatinga vegetation grows in the sertão, a dry area in the Northeast of Brazil. The plants and animals in this area are adapted to drought. | | The Cerrado is a vast savannah vegetation that located south of the Amazon rainforest. The branches of the trees and shrubs of the Cerrado are curled. This is caused by the dry period during which the tops of shrubs often die. During the next rain season, the shrubs continue to grow from lower buds but they cannot grow straight anymore. | | The Pantanal is the largest inland wetland of the world. It is located in the middle of South-America, on the border between Brazil, Paraguay and Bolivia. The unique wildlife of the Pantanal is adapted to annual flooding. | | The Atlantic rainforest or Mata Atlântica is a type of vegetation that can be found near the Brazilian coast between Rio Grande do Norte and Rio Grande do Sul. This biome has a high biodiversity. | | The Pampas can be found in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul and in large parts of Uruguay and Argentine. Grasses are the dominant vegetation of the pampas. | See also: |
