Tropicália
Tropicália or Tropicalismo is a genre of music as well as a social movement from the late 1960-ties. Musically, this genre originated from the Bossa Nova, the rock music and the folkmusic from Bahia.
In 1967 the song ‘Alegria, Alegria ' of Caetano Veloso and the song ‘Domingo no Parque ' of Gilberto Gil and the Mutantes were released. The next year, the Mutantes, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Tom Zé and Nara Leão recorded the LP ‘Tropicália ou panis et circensis ' which is considered to be the manifesto of this group.
As a movement, the Tropicália characterised political activisme and social-awareness as a reaction on the military coupe d'etat of 1964.
The real Tropicália lasted only shortly. From the beginning of the 1970-ties the style was absorbed by the Música Popular Brasileira.
