Passion fruit (maracujá)

The juice of passion fruit is often used in Brazilian desserts and drinks. It may be used as a taste on itself or added to other fruit juices to add flavour. It is never eaten pure.

The passion fruit or maracujá is the fruit of the passion flower. There are more than 400 species and varieties. One of these species is used as a houseplant in cold countries. The Brazilian passion fruits are much bigger than those sold in Europe and North-America.

The juice is exported and used in products like ice-cream, yoghurt and mixed fruit juices.
