Chili pepper (pimenta) and sweet pepper (pimenta doce) belong both to the same species: Capsicum annuum . Befor Columbus discovered the New World, chilipeppers and sweet peppers were only known to the Amerindians. At nowadays, Latin America has still the greatest variety in chilis and sweet peppers.

Brazilians often conserve chili peppers in vinigar or palm oil (dendê). After a while, the liquid gets the flavour of the chili peppers.
