Religion
Traditionally, Brazil is a predominantly Catholic country. This religion was brought to Brazil by the Portuguese who colonised this country since the 16th century. Most immigrants who arrived later were also Catholic. During the last decade however, Protestantism is rapidly expanding in Brazil.
In the Amazon basin there are still Amerindians who practise their own ancient religions. Except for that, Brazil has a number of cults from African origin. The later have however an unofficial character. In most cases, the people who practise these cults are also members of the Catholic Church. |
