Brazilian National Anthem

An other national symbol of Brazil: the Brazilian flag
The national anthem of Brazil is called Hino Nacional do Brasil . It was composed in 1822 by Francisco Manoel da Silva to commemorate the independence. After the proclamation of the republic in 1889 there has been a lengthy debate on new lyrics. It took until 1909 until the lyrics of Joaquim Osório Duque Estrada were officially recognised. The old lyrics have been forgotten.

Outside Brazil, many people confuse the melody of Aquarela do Brasil with the Brazilian national anthem. This is not the national anthem but a Bossa Nova Song by Ary Barroso from 1958.
